Pain Experienced During Pregnancy
More than 50% of women will experience pain with pregnancy. Discomfort is commonly felt in the back, pelvis, neck and legs. Because of increased swelling during pregnancy many woman will also experience carpal tunnel syndrome (pain or numbness in the hands) and thoracic outlet syndrome ( pain or numbness in the arms). A physical therapist trained in the needs of women during pregnancy can help alleviate these problems using soft tissue and joint mobilization, exercise and bracing. Learning about good posture and proper body mechanics- how to move so that you don't hurt yourself- can also be helpful both before and after the baby is born.
