Vagnismus is tightness in the vagina. It is caused by an involuntary contraction in the pelvic floor muscles that can make intercourse, use of tampons or completing a pelvic exam painful or impossible. Physical therapy can help to relax the pelvic floor muscles and stretch the vaginal walls. Treatment may include ultrasound, electrical stimulation and the use of vaginal dilators.
